The important role of the host computer in the industrial control system and its complementary relationship with the PLC

In modern industrial automation, both host computers and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are indispensable and important components. They each play a unique advantage in realizing the production process control, monitoring and data management plays a key role. However, can the host computer completely replace the PLC to realize the core functions of the control system?

First, let's understand the core value of the host computer in industrial control. The host computer, also known as monitoring computer or operator station, is a computer system with powerful data processing capability, graphical display interface and network communication function. It monitors and presents the status of the entire production process in real time by collecting and parsing data from on-site devices (e.g., PLCs), thus providing an intuitive and easy-to-understand view for operators. In addition, the powerful software platform of the upper computer supports complex data analysis, report generation, alarm processing, etc. It is capable of deep mining and optimization of a large number of process parameters, and also realizes the writing and modification of complex logic control strategies to enhance the intelligent decision-making level of the system.

PLC remote gateway can realize remote monitoring of on-site equipment, remote uploading and downloading of PLC programs, etc. Secondly, the upper computer has significant advantages in system configuration and debugging, fault diagnosis and remote management. With the help of the host computer software, technicians can flexibly carry out tasks such as control logic design, system parameter setting and program downloading, which greatly improves the flexibility and maintainability of the system. In addition, the host computer is usually equipped with a powerful communication interface, can be realized with the seamless connection of the various levels of equipment, remote access and control, so that the management and maintenance of large-scale distributed control system is more efficient and convenient.

So, back to the question itself, the host computer can replace the PLC to achieve control functions? Theoretically, with the progress of computer technology, especially the improvement of hardware performance, the development of real-time operating systems and the application of special IO cards, the host computer has the ability to simulate the PLC to achieve the basic input and output control, logic operations and communication interaction. However, in the actual application process, this alternative is not absolutely feasible, mainly depends on the following factors:

  1. Real-time requirements: PLC is known for its built-in hard real-time, for those occasions with extremely high requirements for response speed, such as high-speed motion control or safety-related emergency stop system, PLC can be completed in milliseconds or even microseconds within the logic of judgment and output action, which is difficult to match most of the current general-purpose computers.
  2. System reliability and stability: PLC adopts modular structure design, highly integrated internal components and after strict quality testing, it can operate stably in harsh environments and ensure trouble-free continuous work for a long time. In contrast, as a general-purpose computer device, although the upper computer can be configured through redundancy to improve the reliability, but in the environmental adaptability and long-term stability of the operation of the PLC compared to the challenges still exist.
  3. Cost and Benefit: For small and medium-sized and simple control tasks, the direct use of PLC is often cheaper and easier to install and commission. For large, complex and highly intelligent control systems, the use of a host computer in combination with a PLC is more conducive to system expansion and optimization and upgrading, and the overall benefits may be higher.

In summary, although in some specific scenarios, the host computer has the technical potential to replace the PLC to achieve some or all of the control functions, but in the actual field of industrial control, the host computer and the PLC is more in a complementary way to work together. On the one hand, the host computer to take up the system of advanced control, data analysis, fault diagnosis and management and other important tasks; on the other hand, the PLC is responsible for the field level of real-time control and implementation of the task. The combination of the two builds a highly integrated control system that can not only meet real-time control requirements, but also realize intelligent optimization and remote management, and jointly promote the continuous progress and development of industrial automation.
