Data exchange between different PLCs

Dec 22, 2025 Leave a message

In modern industrial automation control systems, programmable logic controllers (PLCs) have become indispensable key devices. PLCs feature robust data processing capabilities, extensive I/O interfaces, and reliable communication functions, making them widely used in the automated control of various production processes. However, as industrial production scales continue to expand and production technologies advance, enterprises often need to interconnect multiple PLC systems to achieve data exchange and coordinated control. This article provides a detailed introduction to methods for data exchange between different PLCs.

I. Fieldbus-Based Data Exchange

Fieldbus is a communication network connecting field devices, enabling data exchange and coordinated control between them. Common fieldbus standards include Profibus, Modbus, and CAN. By connecting different PLCs to the same fieldbus, data exchange between PLCs can be achieved.

1. Profibus: A widely adopted fieldbus standard in Europe, supporting multiple communication protocols such as DP, FMS, and PA. Connecting different PLCs to a Profibus network enables data exchange between them. For example, Siemens S7-300 series PLCs can exchange data with other PLCs via the Profibus-DP protocol.

2. Modbus: Modbus is a fieldbus standard widely adopted in Asia, primarily used for connecting industrial electronic devices. By connecting different PLCs to the Modbus bus, data exchange between PLCs can be achieved. For instance, Schneider Electric's Quantum series PLCs can exchange data with other PLCs via the Modbus protocol.

3. CAN: Controller Area Network (CAN) is a communication protocol widely used in automotive and industrial automation, characterized by high speed, reliability, and interference resistance. Connecting different PLCs to a CAN bus enables data exchange between them. For example, Rockwell Automation's RSLogix 5000 series PLCs can exchange data with other PLCs via the CAN protocol.

II. Ethernet-Based Data Exchange

Ethernet is a widely adopted communication technology in computer networks, offering advantages such as high transmission speeds, low cost, and easy scalability. In recent years, an increasing number of PLCs have begun supporting Ethernet communication, making data exchange between PLCs more convenient.

1. Ethernet/IP-Based Data Exchange: By integrating the Ethernet/IP protocol stack into PLC systems, data exchange between PLCs can be achieved. For example, Siemens S7-1200 series PLCs support the Ethernet/IP protocol, enabling data exchange with other PLCs via Ethernet.

2. OPC UA-Based Data Exchange: OPC UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture) is an open industrial communication standard designed to achieve interoperability between different devices and systems. By enabling different PLCs to support the OPC UA protocol, data exchange between PLCs can be realized. For instance, the Allen-Bradley MicroLogix series PLC supports the OPC UA protocol, enabling data exchange with other PLCs over Ethernet.

III. Data Exchange via Other Communication Methods

Beyond fieldbus and Ethernet, other communication methods facilitate data exchange between PLCs, such as Ethernet/IP and PROFINET.

Ethernet/IP: Ethernet/IP is a network protocol for industrial automation control systems that enables data exchange and coordinated control between devices. Connecting different PLCs to an Ethernet/IP network facilitates data exchange between them. For instance, Rockwell's ControlLogix series PLCs support the Ethernet/IP protocol, enabling data exchange with other PLCs via Ethernet.
